Veterinary Student Extern Program

The Externship

Our Veterinary Medical Center is commited to supporting the education and training of the next generation of veterinarians, in particular, those with an interest in pursuing a career with an animal welfare organization. We provide externship opportunities for fourth year veterinary students to gain valuable hands-on experience and training in a unique hospital setting that merges both shelter medicine and individualized care for publicly owned pets. Students are encouraged to schedule a three to six week term during which they will have the opportunity to gain extensive surgical experience, complete "rounds" evaluating and treating shelter animals, and be a part of the daily operations of our hospital.

Housing

We maintain an offsite studio apartment for the extern program, located in a scenic location on the site of the Ruth Melichar Bird Center (Boise's wild bird rescue and rehabilation center). The apartment provides internet access, private full bath, a minimal kitchenette, and secure parking.
