Students who have been assigned to complete 10 hours or less of community service for a school or club project qualify for short term volunteer positions at the shelter.
Age requirements
The minimum age for volunteers at the shelter is 12 years. Between the ages of 12 to 16 years old, students must volunteer with an adult. Student that are 16 years or older may volunteer on their own, but if they're under 18 they must have their application signed by a parent or guardian.
What tasks do short term volunteers complete?
Short term volunteers are not required to take the volunteer orientation classes that regular volunteers complete. Due to this fact, short term volunteers do not handle animals at the shelter. Non-animal handling activities vary, but short term volunteers often work on activities such as unfolding newspapers to line cat cages, putting together adoption paperwork packets, and sorting donated pet food.
Scheduling a Short term volunteer position
Days usually available for short term volunteers are Sundays and Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday after school. Please be aware that short term volunteer slots fill up at least one week in advance and near the end of the school semester, they can be booked one month in advance. Plan ahead and schedule your short term hours well in advance of your deadline!
Please Note: All short term student volunteer slots have been filled for the spring 2010 semester.
Contact the volunteer office at (208)331-8553 or volunteer@idahohumanesociety.org to schedule as a short term volunteer.
Other options
For students younger than 12 years of age or for those who cannot get scheduled for a short term project at the shelter can still help the animals! Students can do a donation drive with their school, club, neighbors, or other group. Click here to see the shelter's wish list.
